The legend called Richard Branson

A knight of the British Empire, Richard Branson is an extrovert. He was born on the 18th of July 1950. He was honoured in 2000, for being a foremost entrepreneur. There are many quotes from him on happiness and making positive decisions.

Richard faced many challenges, and he always found a way to leave his failures behind. A firm believer in saying yes to opportunities. He has the uncanny ability to spot opportunities for making a profit.

Early years
Richard was the first child born to his parents. He grew up in Surrey, England and he suffered from
dyslexia. This hampered his ability to excel as a student. He dropped out of school at the age of 16.

First break
Perhaps spurred by the knowledge that he was not cut out for school, Richard started a magazine
named “Student”. It was a success as a result of the advertising tactic he employed to break even. This
was the start of the flourishing career of starting new ventures.

The adverts which brought Richard his big break were from music. He soon began a record label after the success of his magazine, which was named Virgin Records.

This was a larger success and the beginning of
the Virgin conquest of entrepreneurship by Richard.

Family
He got married to his first wife, Kristen Tomassi in 1972. The marriage lasted until 1979 when they
decided to get a divorce. He remarried in 1989, to Joan Templeton whom he had been in a relationship
with since 1979. Richard and his wife have a daughter Holly, and a son named Sam.

Activities
Richard Branson is an astute businessman. He prefers to be seen as an entrepreneur, rather than to be
seen as a business mogul. He has interests in aviation, space travel, hospitality and telecommunications.
He is the chairman of Virgin Group. He has successfully made a fortune from licensing his brand name
and ideas.

Entertainment
Though Richard started as a record company executive, he had to sell his first record label Virgin Music
to EMI. He was heartbroken by this act, and he formed a new record company, V2 to maintain his
interest in the music business.

He has appeared in some movies, and he broke the world record for crossing the Pacific Ocean from
Japan to Canada. This feat was accomplished using hot air balloons.
Richard authored his autobiography- ‘Losing My Virginity’- which became a success because of its
motivational message.

He loves to say yes, reminiscent of the movie "Yes Man" starring Jim Carrey.
